Adnan Hamwi is a junior here at Monta Vista High School. I have known him since he was a freshman. His positive attitude and acts of kindness have increased over the years. He continually trains his mind to be more compassionate and caring. Adnan has been in the Scouts since he was 5 years old and is currently working on his Eagle Scout. He definitely embodies the Scout Law, especially kind, cheerful, courteous, friendly, helpful, and trustworthy. He trains younger Scouts and has helped the elderly at a retirement home. He has attended our Challenge Day program three times; twice as a Teen Leader. This is a program that celebrates diversity, truth and full expression. It promotes a school where every student can feel safe, loved and celebrated.

He represented his American Studies class, by going to our Principal to request action about relationship abuse on campus. Adnan always has a smile on his face. He makes it a point to compliment others, whether he knows them or not. He has a way of knowing when someone is down and makes every effort to help them up.

Susan Cooper, one of Adnan’s teachers, says: “Adnan naturally reaches out to the other students. In particular, I saw Adnan reach out to another student who at the beginning of the year was sarcastic and unpleasant to talk to. Adnan was always pleasant to this young man and made conversation with him. Over the school year I saw this student change. Today this student is very social and seems so much happier. I have never seen Adnan act in any way other than encouraging and friendly with anyone he encounters. His warmth and encouragement improve any social setting in which he is in.”
